About Video Movie Transfer
Video Movie Transfer is the digital preservation service specializing in making memories from your analog tapes and movie film. If you are wondering a little bit about how to handle your physical media until you can get it preserved here are a few tips. A magnetic tape like VHS, Betamax, Hi8/8mm, Mini DV have a life expectancy of ten to thirty years. Most of what I get in is still working but they are beginning to see signal loss which can effect color and audio quality of your tapes. Film is starting to darken and fade making it harder to pull off images. The biggest enemy is heat and humidity it is best to keep your items in a cool dry place until they can be digitized. Watch for mold or mildew that can grow on both tape and film and further degrade and affect the quality. A distinctive vinegary smell is another indication that your media is breaking down.
Magnetic and optical deterioration is inevitable and irreversible. The best thing you can do is get your tapes and film digitized making them easier to mange, save, share, edit, preserve and protect. Until we meet store your items in a cool dry place never the attic or basement. Tapes should be upright in sleeve and stored in the middle of the tape to lessen tension. If your tape is broken and needs repair I can help with that too.
Ideally film should be stored horizontally (flat) in the original storage case to avoid warping. Keeping film around 40 degrees Fahrenheit/ 4.44 Celsius with relative humidity at thirty percent. When you are ready I am ready for you just let me know and I can give you a free no obligation quote in person by email or by phone.
